We all remember where we were that Saturday in September

On 21 September, 2014 Kenyans marked one year since the Westgate tragedy. When a student in Nairobi’s Aga Khan Academy got in touch with Basco Paints to share his proposal for a school project he was working on and which had been inspired by Spray for Change, the company came on board. The idea: sharing a message of peace through graffiti to commemorate the Westgate anniversary.

Working with Spray for Change artists Wise Two, Esen and Kerosh, Azaan Rahemtulla, 15, created his sketch for the art installation and then refined it with the artists into what was created. ‘I believe this piece is going to make drivers or pedestrians think, and share a message of optimism to make them smile,’ he said.

‘We all remember where we were that Saturday in September,’ says Basco Paints’ Head of Marketing, Altaf Jiwa. ‘It is hoped that this art installation will help in the healing of all those affected by the tragedy,’ he added. The location is close to Westgate, facing Ring Road Westlands and The Oval.
