In May, 2015 Spray for Change collaborated with the Red Cross Machakos Branch to develop an artistic youth centre. The Youth Empowerment Centre will serve as a vibrant and creative social and educational hub for the youth in Machakos. It comprises two transformed shipping containers with a terrace and a wide open space at the back that can be used for events. The centre was launched in July 2015.
In order to enable the youth to ‘own’ their space, the Red Cross Branch engaged Spray for Change artists Bankslave and Kerosh to work together with the youth to paint the containers and stencil the surrounding walls. The project was carried out over a four day workshop.
‘Duracoat Spray for Change has continued to be influential in raising the profile of urban art and is inspiring creativity and positive change amongst people of all ages,’ said Altaf Jiwa, Head of Marketing for Basco Paints. It has been featured on CNN and has won various local and international awards. Artists from the project have subsequently also been featured in festivals and work around the world, including the Unites States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Tunisia and Rwanda.
